Week 6 of the NFL Season Started Without Incident [Recap]

Week 6 of the NFL season started without incident Sunday, Oct. 18, 2020. Leading up to Sunday’s games, many reports of positive coronavirus tests ran rampant about the league.

In week 6, the Las Vegas Raiders, Los Angeles Chargers, New Orleans Saints, and Seattle Seahawks were all on bye weeks.

NFL: Bears 23-16 Over PanthersNFL

Bears defense rise to the occasion with a sack and intersection of Panther quarterback Teddy Bridgewater in the first quarter. Bridgewater was under siege most of the game, sacked four times, and pressured more than those four sacks.

DeAndre Houston-Carson’s interception of Bridgewater in the final minutes of the game saves the day. The Bears are now 5-1; 1st in the NFC North, and the Panthers are now 3-3; 3rd in the NFC South.

NFL: Buccaneers 38-10 Over Packers

Tom Brady and the Buccaneers handed Aaron Rogers and the Packers an embarrassing beat down.

NFL Brady had three touchdown passes, including one to Rob Gronkowski. Gronk delivered his signature spike during his first touchdown since 2018.

Aaron Rogers had not thrown an interception in the past 5 weeks, but the Bucs would intercept him twice in the first half of the game. The Buccaneers are now 4-2; 1st in the NFC South, and the Packers are now 4-1; 2nd in the NFC North.

NFL: Raven 30-28 Over Eagles

The Ravens and their NFL MVP quarterback Lamar Jackson held off an Eagles’ charge towards the end of the game. Jackson racked up 186 passing yards and a touchdown pass.

Despite calls for Carson Wentz to be replaced by Jalen Hurts, Wentz had two touchdown passes. The Ravens are now  5-1; 2nd in the AFC North, and the Eagles are 1-4-1; 2nd in the NFC East.

NFL: Steelers 38-7 Over BrownsNFL

The Steelers put an old school boot stomping on the browns in a pivotal AFC North matchup. The brown’s offensive line was under duress while Baker Mayfield was sacked four times. Steelers running back James Conner rushed for 101 yards and a touchdown.

Still one of the remaining NFL undefeated teams, the Steelers are now 5-0; 1st in the AFC North, and the Browns are 4-2; 3rd in the AFC North.

NFL: Titans 42-36 Over Texans

After blowing a three-quarter lead, the Titans had to bring the heat late in the fourth quarter with a Tannahill touchdown pass to A.J. Brown to take the game into overtime. During the overtime session, the Titans called a trick play to Derrick Henry. He received the direct snap and powered his way into the endzone to keep Tennessee’s undefeated ranking alive.

Still one of the remaining NFL undefeated teams, the Titans are now 5-0; 1st in the AFC South, and the Texans are 1-5; 3rd in the AFC South.

NFL: Broncos 18-12 Over PatriotsNFL

The Patriots played like this was their first game. Reshuffling the offensive line because of positive COVIC-19 test results did not make things any better.

The Broncos appeared to want to give the game away with Drew Lock’s two interceptions. This put the Patriots in a position to win the game, possibly.

New England did not have what it takes to put this game in the win column. Cam Newton seems to be very rusty with his accuracy.

The Broncos are now 2-3; 3rd in the AFC West, and the Patriots are 2-3; 3rd in the AFC East.

NFL: 49ers 24-16 Over Rams

Jared Goff seems to be experiencing a middle-age crisis at the age of 26. His erratic play would lead one to believe that he was being rushed by 49ers greats, Justin Smith, Justin Tuck, or Jared Allen.

In an important divisional matchup, Jimmy Garoppolo threw three touchdown passes to seal the victory. The 49ers are now 3-3; 4th in the NFL West, and the Rams are 4-2; 2nd in the NFC West.

NFL: Chiefs 26-17 Over BillsNFL

It looked as if neither team could get anything going. Josh Allen moved the ball down the field to the Chief’s 30-yard line. They could not convert a 3rd and 7, leaving them to kick a field goal.

Mahon, late in the first quarter, threw an eleven-yard strike to his tight end Kelce for a touchdown. Darrel Williams also contributed with a 13-yard run for a touchdown with 1:18 left in the 3rd quarter.

The Chiefs are now 5-1; 1st in the AFC West, and the Bills are 4-2;1st in the AFC East.

NFL: Nfl: Cardinals 38-10 Over Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys appeared to be missing their quarterback Dak Prescott during this game. Not that the Cardinals were any better in that first quarter. Arizona’s first three possession ended with a punt while the Cowboys’ first four possessions were two punts and two fumbles by star running back Ezekiel Elliot. After their first touchdown in the 2nd quarter with 4:38 left on the clock, the Cardinals never looked back.

The Cardinals are now 4-2; 2nd in the NFC West, and the Cowboys are 2-4; 1st in the NFC East.

Sheriff Responds to 15-Year-Old Murder Victim Stabbed in Walmart

The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office responded to a disturbance at a Walmart in Lake Charles, Louisiana, on Saturday night, Jan. 23, 2021, involving female juveniles.

Deputies arrived on the scene at around 7:30 p.m. to find a fight between the girls erupted inside the Walmart on Highway 14. The victim was taken to the hospital and later died.

The assailants were booked into the Calcasieu Parish Juvenile Detention Center.

Sheriff Tony Mancuso held a press conference about the fatal stabbing of a 15-year-old and the arrest of four girls between the ages of 12 and 14, on Sunday, January 24.

Sheriff Mancuso Announces Strict Curfew Enforcement After Walmart Slaying

Mancuso’s words spoke volumes about his distress over this senseless murder at the Walmart. He said the knives used in the attack were allegedly stolen at the Walmart where the crime occurred. The sheriff said the entire event was recorded on social media, video, photos, and posts that he found “very disturbing.”

We have a problem in our community we’re going to have to address. It’s just heartbreaking when we have to come in and pick up the pieces because so many families are damaged.

Notably, the Walmart slaying is the third homicide involving juveniles under 16 years of age in the past six months.

Sheriff Mancuso said these crimes are not isolated racially, as they have been committed by members of all races and backgrounds. He further stated there is a problem with children having access to weapons.

He implored parents to aware of their children’s movements on social media pointing back to the slaying of the 15-year-old girl at Walmart this past Saturday. It is imperative that parents know what their kids are posting and the content they view.

Not being tech-savvy is no excuse, the sheriff accused. He said they had better learn.

walmartThe sheriff announced all law enforcement in Calcasieu Parish will aggressively enforce curfews as outlined in local and state laws.

He added this is not only the responsibility of the police — parents and other adults must be involved with the enforcement as well.

Police throughout the parish are instructed to have a zero-tolerance policy on curfew. Violators will be dealt with as the law provides.

All individuals 16 and under must be at home or under the supervision of an adult between 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. CT. on weekdays, 12 a.m. to 5 a.m. on weekends.

“There’s just really no good reason for a minor to be roaming about the streets after 11 o’clock at night. Nothing good is going to come of that,” as Commander Gene Pittman stated during the summer of 2019 when crime among juvenile-crime was on the rise in the parish.

Because of their ages, the names of the girls involved in the Walmart murder and that of the victim have not been released.

Bernie Sanders Converts Inauguration Meme Into Food

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) was photographed sitting alone at the Biden|Harris inauguration; he was bundled up against the bitter wind chill factor of 34 degrees. The internet went wild creating memes. Not a man to be bullied, a sweatshirt was created, sold online in his campaign store, and donated 100 percent of the profits to Meals on Wheels in Sanders’ home state, reports Rolling Stone on Jan. 22, 2021.

Jane Catton of  Age Well, the largest provider of Meals on Wheels in Vermont, expressed the agency’s gratitude for Sanders’ generosity during an interview with a local news station:

On behalf of all of the area agencies on aging and our partners in the community who help us provide meal services, this is a tremendous gift and we couldn’t be more grateful.

Age Well’s website reports Vermont’s senior population is the 3rd largest in the country — 168,999 in 2020. A little over a quarter of those 60 years and older live alone. Isolated seniors are at a greater risk of missing meals, falls resulting in injury and depression.

Not only does the Older Americans Act (OAA) nutrition programs deliver nutritious meals, staff members complete friendly visits and safety checks to those at risk. Meals on Wheels volunteers not only drop off meals but oftentimes are the only person they might see for days or weeks. Seniors receiving services in Vermont report:

  • 83 percent say the program has improved their overall health.
  • 86 percent indicate they feel safer as a result of the program.
  • 9 of 10 recipients feel more safe and secure in their own homes.

This program is fantastic. It saved my life.

WCAX announced the sale of the sweatshirt on the Sanders Campaign store. At the time of the broadcast, there was a disclaimer posted alongside the “Chairman Sanders Crewneck” “Due to overwhelming demand for this item, it will be 4-8 weeks until you receive your sweatshirt.” The shirt sold out quickly, and the website is not offering backorders as yet.

The mittens Sanders was wearing when the photo was snapped were made by a woman who sent them to him as a consolation gift after his loss to Hillary Clinton. Jen Ellis was overwhelmed with purchase requests that she cannot possibly fill. Instead, she offered to auction off the three pairs she had left.

Baseball Legend ‘Hammerin Hank’ Aaron Passes Away Age 86

“Hammerin’ Hank” Aaron started his baseball career as a teen in 1951, has passed away on Jan. 22, 2021. He was 86 years old. He credits his brother and uncle’s love, encouragement, and support that helped him pursue his dream of playing ball.

As a child, the legendary ballplayer’s family was so poor he did not have traditional equipment — instead of a ball and bat, he used bottle caps and sticks. In 1949, 15-year-old Aaron tried out for the Brooklyn Dodgers but did not make the team. Instead, he returned to school and earned his high school diploma.

Two years later, his career began when he joined the Indianapolis Clowns, a minors team in the Negro American League. One month later, he signed on with the Atlanta Braves and was assigned to a team in Jacksonville, Florida, in the South Atlantic League.

aaronAs a Black man playing in the South, he began hearing taunts from Caucasian spectators for the first time in his career.

In 1954, Arron hit the majors in Milwaukee. After moving north, he quietly allied himself with the growing civil rights movement. He was instrumental in the-Sen. John F. Kennedy’s winning the Democratic presidential primary in Wisconsin.

Arron expressed concern when the Braves moved to Atlanta, Georgia, in 1966 — the civil rights movement’s height. He recalled his childhood in Mobile, Alabama, and the time he spent playing ball in Florida. Aaron said:

I have lived in the South, and I don’t want to live there again. We can go anywhere in Milwaukee. I don’t know what will happen in Atlanta.

In “The Last Hero,” a 2010 Aaron biography, the author talked about how the ball player never thought of himself as an important historical person, especially Jackie Robinson. Howard Bryant wrote:

Yet by twice integrating the South — first in the Sally League and later as the first Black star on a major league team in the South (at the apex of the civil rights movement, no less) — his road in many ways was no less lonely, and in other ways far more difficult.

In 1974, Aaron broke Babe Ruth’s record with 715 career home runs under the threat of death. When he retired in 1976, he held numerous other records, including being “named to the all-star team every year between 1955 and 1975,” according to The Washington Post.

Aaron received recognition from Presidents Clinton and George W. Bush — in 2001, he was awarded a Presidential Citizens Medal, and in 2002, he was presented with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Jimmy Carter described him as a “personal hero.”
